Money Secrets of the Amish

I enjoyed reading Money Secrets of the Amish by Lorilee Cracker. The name of the book could easily be titled “Managing Money for Dummies” but apparently that title was already taken… so the other name had to make do. The book has money tips on most every area of life. The motto that guides the Amish is summed up by the author as “use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.” Cracker has examples of ways that people can be more Amish approaching money as well some incredible stories about Amish people saving incredible amounts of money while earning modest incomes. One family saved $400,000 in 20 years while he was under 40 years old with 14 KIDS!

These tips are truly common sense things that most of us usually don’t follow. We put so much value in “new” it clouds our judgment. Being fiscally conservative is a cultural value of the Amish. The best thing about this book is that you could start practicing many of these tips immediately. Though, that is the case with many money management books such as Dave Ramsey or Crown Financial.

This book is humorous and light but is really intended for women. That is not a bad thing because most women manage the finances within the household, if not for the whole family. So, if you are a woman, especially with a family, I recommend this book.
